A Review of Islam and the Western Family Organisation in Modern Eras in the light of seerah (PBHM)
Abstract
This review examines the intersections and divergences between Islamic family
structures and Western family organisations in modern eras, highlighting the
evolving dynamics influenced by globalization, socio-cultural shifts, and legal
reforms. Islamic family systems, rooted in religious doctrine and traditional
practices, emphasize roles, responsibilities, and familial hierarchies grounded in
Sharia law. In contrast, Western family structures often reflect more liberal and
individualistic values, with increased emphasis on gender equality, diverse family
forms, and legal autonomy. The review explores how these differing frameworks
address issues such as marriage, divorce, child-rearing, and gender roles, and
how each system responds to modern challenges such as migration,
secularization, and evolving social norms. Through comparative analysis, the
review aims to provide insights into how these family systems are adapting and
negotiating their identities within a rapidly changing global context, offering a
nuanced understanding of the complexities at the intersection of religion, culture,
and modernity.
