Islamic Principles of Spousal Communication: A Research-Based Study in the Light of the Qur’an and Sunnah

Abstract

This research explores the Islamic principles of communication between spouses as derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah. The study begins with a linguistic and conceptual analysis of “takhāṭub” (mutual conversation), establishing its ethical and spiritual framework in Islamic tradition. It then investigates the Qur’anic guidelines regarding gentle speech, the use of respectful language, and divine expressions such as qawlan maʿrūfan and qawlan karīman, emphasizing their relevance to marital discourse. Drawing on prophetic traditions, the behavior of the righteous predecessors (salaf), and classical juristic interpretations from major Islamic schools of thought, the study presents practical models of courteous spousal communication. Moreover, it critically examines contemporary challenges such as digital communication, linguistic informality, and the rise of verbal conflict in marital settings. By comparing past ideals with modern realities, the paper argues for the revival of prophetic etiquettes in speech to nurture compassion, mutual respect, and emotional harmony in marital life. The findings highlight the transformative role of ethical speech in preserving family stability and social harmony.
