Abstract

This study explores the significant contributions of Aisha Bewley, a renowned Muslim convert and a prolific translator of Islamic classical texts. Over the last five decades, she has dedicated herself to translating more than 73 classical Arabic manuscripts into English, encompassing fields such as Qurʾānic sciences, tafsīr, ḥadīth, Islamic history, mysticism, fiqh, and ilm al-kalām (science of logic). Aisha Bewley has also authored numerous books on topics including Muslim women's empowerment, the Islamic political system, and Qurʾānic studies. Her work has been instrumental in bridging the gap between the classical Islamic tradition and English-speaking audiences. In recognition of her immense contribution to Islamic scholarship, the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Amman, Jordan, declared her one of the most influential Muslim women of 2023. Beyond her translations, Bewley has actively promoted Sufi Islam in the United States and delivered lectures at institutions such as Dallas College and Lady Aisha College, Cape Town. She has also traveled to Nigeria, Bermuda, Germany, and Spain for Islamic daʿwah (propagation). This paper highlights her tireless efforts in making Islamic knowledge accessible to the West while encouraging women scholars in Pakistan to translate her literary contributions into Urdu, ensuring her ideas and methodologies reach a broader audience in the Muslim world.
