Impact of Custom of Dowry on the Society of Pakistan: An Analytical Study in Seerat Perspective

Dowry is a prevailing serious social issue of Pakistan. Custom of dowry is originated from Indian society and has been adopted by the Muslims of Pakistan. This issue has also effected the marriage ratio in Pakistan as most of women remain unmarried due to this curse. It is increasing the misery of people, as poverty rate is counted 31.3% in Pakistan. To accomplish the demand of dowry, family of the bride becomes indebted. If the bride does not bring the demanded dowry, she suffers domestic violence and, at times, even divorce. This issue not only enhances extravagance and show-off but also develops inferiority complex among the women. It is estimated, in Pakistan 95% families of brides grant dowry, 2000 die in dowry-related cases annually. In Islamic context of dowry, marriage of Hazrat Fatima (RA) has been exemplified by scholars. Holy Prophet (SAW) advised Hazrat (Ali) to sell the saddle (mehr of Hazrat Fatima (RA)) and to purchase a few requisites). In fact Islam does not put any financial burden on the bride or her family. The purpose of this research paper is to highlight the social issue of dowry in Pakistan, its impact on society and analyses it in the light of Seerat-un-Nabi (SAW).
