Abstract

Polygamy, as permitted in Islam, is a practice that allows a man to marry more than one wife under specific conditions. The Quran allows up to four wives, with the condition that a man must treat each wife with equality and justice, particularly in financial, emotional, and social responsibilities. This permission is not absolute but is regulated by stringent ethical and legal guidelines to ensure fairness and the protection of women’s rights. The reasons behind Islamic polygamy are multifaceted, ranging from the need to care for widows and orphans in times of war to the establishment of a just social system. However, the practice is not encouraged unless necessary and is meant to fulfill a specific societal function. This paper explores the Islamic perspective on polygamy, examining its underlying principles, limits, and the conditions that make it permissible. It also delves into the social and legal implications of polygamy and compares the application of these rules in different countries, highlighting the variations in their legal systems. Through these lenses, the article aims to present a comprehensive understanding of polygamy’s role in Islamic society and its modern-day application across the globe.
